Churches (Kirchen) of Vienna

There are several things that I collect photographically, including churches (Kirchen).

My memory of our first trip to Vienna is primarily of the churches.  I did not remember seeing all the other magnificent buildings…maybe because it was nearly winter.  It was cold.  Still we walked and walked and walked and all along the way we passed churches and I swear if we visited one church we visited 100 churches.  They are so irresistible.  Each church is uniquely exquisite.  Of course I didn’t have a digital camera then and all my photos of that trip are in a box somewhere!

So…this is one of the most famous Viennese churches…Stephankirche (St Stephens Cathedral).   Mass happened to be starting so we attended and I quietly snapped photos.

And this church is quite different but I just love it….Franz von Assissi (St Francis of Assisi) at Mexikoplatz near the Danube River.  It looks more like a fortress than a church.

Stephankirche – I was in Vienna when President Kennedy was assassinated. I visited this beautiful church and it was ablaze with candles that the compassionate Vienesse people had lit in his honor. An experience of the heart.

These pictures of the churches of VIenna, are truly beautiful, Yes it is a constant struggle to maintain these old churches, they are going to start on ST. Augustine’s here in Tucson, quite a job they said.
