Cathedral of St Nicolas

May 12, 2008

Okay…this is the last church…for awhile.  It was a rainy day so the photo do not do this church justice but I loved this church.  The gold is brilliant and also the colors that rim the facade just under the gold.  Oh…it is just beautiful.   We happened on it as we were searching for […]

Another Church, The Karl Kirche

May 10, 2008

We pass this church often when we ride the train or our bikes into the city.  This church is right next to a university or technical college and the platz is always busy.  In the afternoons there is a man playing beautiful music on the accordian and students lounging in the sun.  It is just […]

Churches (Kirchen) of Vienna

May 10, 2008

There are several things that I collect photographically, including churches (Kirchen).  My memory of our first trip to Vienna is primarily of the churches.  I did not remember seeing all the other magnificent buildings…maybe because it was nearly winter.  It was cold.  Still we walked and walked and walked and all along the way we […]

Now Seriously…We have Wheels

May 9, 2008

Finally…we found a Wohnmobile.  Near perfect.  Right under our noses.  Literally 5 minutes down the road (by bicycle). We did a deal today.  But we’re not going anywhere this weekend.  Monday is a holiday and this morning there were reports of 33km long traffic jams out of the city. Ja Wahnsinn!

Cafe Ratings and Cafe Sperl

May 9, 2008

Now I’ve decided that some sort of cafe rating is in order. On a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 is Yuk and 5 is Near Perfect (only Mother Nature does perfect), we’re going to score the following criteria: Atmosphere, Cake, Coffee, Service. When it comes to coffee…remember…we’re talking espresso. And of course we’re […]

Grantig Viennese

May 7, 2008

I cannot resist a comment about the disposition of the Viennese. We spent the afternoon with Slice’s very interesting and energetic 80-year old Tante and he asked her “Why are the Viennese so grantig (grumpy)?” And they are. The more you smile at them the more they scowl. They will deliberately turn away. Smiling at […]

Good Coffee Places in Vienna

May 3, 2008

We are always on the look out for good coffee joints.  We’re talking good espresso coffee.  We know the…. …from a previous visit to Vienna.  This is a traditional Viennese coffeehouse.  The waiters are suitably serious and dour but in his inimitable style Slice gets them chatting and laughing. The Schwarzenberg remains our favourite place […]

We have wheels!

May 2, 2008

No wohnmobile yet. I’m talking about bicycles! Yesterday Slice picked up his bicycle. I’ve had mine for a week. Secondhand bikes in the local bike shops range from ?150 ($246, $A262) to ?250 ($410, $A437) but we scored very nice bikes on ebay for ?81 ($133, $A143) and ?98 ($160, $A170). So we spent the […]

Wohnmobile Stolen or Not?

April 30, 2008

Well…we were the leading bidder on a great Wohnmobile on ebay (Austria). But something about the deal really bugged Slice. So he did some research and discovered that this particular Wohnmobile was purchased from Poland and put back on ebay just a few days later. Hmmmm. There is a huge stolen vehicle racket out of […]
